Tournament Formats

Choose the best format for your tournament

Groups + Playoff

Teams are divided into groups where everyone plays against each other. The top teams from each group advance to a single-elimination playoff bracket.

How it works

1. Teams are randomly split into groups of 3-4 2. Each group plays round-robin (everyone vs everyone) 3. Top 2 from each group advance to playoffs 4. Playoffs are single-elimination until the champion
Best for

8-32 teams. Guarantees each team plays several matches before elimination begins.

Example

16 teams → 4 groups of 4 → 8 advance → Quarterfinals → Semifinals → Final

Round Robin

Every team plays against every other team. The team with the most points at the end wins. No elimination — everyone plays the same number of matches.

How it works

1. Schedule is generated so every team meets every other team once 2. Win = 3 points, Draw = 1 point, Loss = 0 points 3. Final standings determine the champion
Best for

4-10 teams. Fairest format — every team faces every opponent.

Example

6 teams → 15 matches total → 5 rounds → Winner by points

Single Elimination

Lose once and you're out! The fastest tournament format — each match eliminates one team until only the champion remains.

How it works

1. Teams are paired up in an elimination bracket 2. Winners advance, losers are eliminated 3. Each round halves the field until the final
Best for

4-64 teams. Quick format when time is limited.

Example

8 teams → Quarterfinals (4 matches) → Semifinals (2) → Final (1) = 7 matches total

Groups + Reclassification

Teams play in initial groups, then get regrouped by placement. All 1st-place teams play each other for the championship, all 2nd-place teams for 5th-8th, and so on.

How it works

1. Teams split into groups of 3-4, play round-robin 2. After all group matches, teams are regrouped by placement: - All 1st-place teams → Gold Group (play for 1st-4th) - All 2nd-place teams → Silver Group (play for 5th-8th) - All 3rd-place teams → Bronze Group (play for 9th-12th) - All 4th-place teams → Consolation Group (play for 13th-16th) 3. Each reclassification group plays round-robin 4. Final standings within each group determine overall placement
Best for

12-20 teams. Every team plays many matches and gets ranked precisely.

Example

16 teams → 4 groups of 4 → Regroup → Gold/Silver/Bronze/Consolation → Final rankings 1st-16th
